Theme: A dry soul needs more than effort; it needs refilling from the Holy Spirit.

Scripture: Matthew 25:3–4 – “The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.”

Devotional Thought:

There's nothing quite like the panic that hits when you're cruising down I-95, doing a little over the speed limit (let's be honest), and that low oil light suddenly flashes on. It's that immediate, sinking feeling: Something's not right... and if I ignore it, it's going to get worse.

That moment feels a lot like certain seasons in my spiritual life. I'm going through the motions, moving fast, trying to keep it all together, and then, out of nowhere, the warning light in my soul flickers on. I realize I'm dry. Depleted. Running on fumes.

Jesus told a parable in Matthew 25 that speaks directly to this. Ten women were waiting for the bridegroom. They all had lamps. But only five brought extra oil. The others assumed what they had would be enough. When the moment came, they weren't ready, not because they weren't sincere, but because they weren't filled.

This story hits hard because it's not about laziness. It's about neglect. It's possible to look ready on the outside while being empty on the inside. The oil represents the Holy Spirit: the ongoing presence and power of God that fuels our faith, keeps our light burning, and sustains us through the wait.

And here's the hard truth: no one else can refill your lamp for you. You can't live off someone else's fire. You can't substitute spiritual activity for intimacy with God. If we don't make space to be filled, through prayer, worship, rest, and the Word, we will eventually burn out, no matter how well we started.

So, what's your oil level today? Is your heart burning bright with fresh passion, or has your warning light been blinking for a while now?

God isn't asking you to push harder. He's inviting you to pause, pull over, and let Him refill you. There's grace for your depletion and strength for your tomorrow, if you'll slow down long enough to receive it.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, I confess that I've been trying to do too much without staying filled by You. I'm so tired of running on empty. Teach me to abide, to rest, to draw deeply from Your presence. Fill me afresh today, not just to get by, but to overflow with Your strength and love.
