Friends, Tweets, Likes, and Subscribers have become the ambition of many people. We often value the opinions of strangers more than the relationships with those we know. In our current society, we're witnessing a cheapened version of what a real friend is and what a relationship should be.

Friendship, generally, is based on the concept of unity. The term "companion" used in verse 63 of the KJV reflects this idea in Hebrew: knit together as one man.

It is God and His Word that have the ability to unify and connect people from different walks of life. This psalm glorifies God and His Word. Bible commentator, Charles Bridges said it best - "union with Him is union with them."

The wonderful companionship of those who, like us, love the Lord Jesus with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength is truly special. My older pastor would exclaim, "Oh, what a fellowship!" when the saints gathered. The joy we feel when we see each other during the week, and our united proclamation of "How great is our God! Sing with me, how great!" is indeed exhilarating.

In the gospels of Matthew and Mark, it's documented that a crowd informs Jesus that his mother and brothers are outside waiting to speak with him. He asks the group in front of him, "who is my mother, or my brothers?" Jesus looks around, points at the disciples in front of him, and declares, "Look, you all are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, sister, and mother." I don’t think anyone was expecting that kind of response.

Not everyone in life is your friend. Only those who uphold the teachings of God and do the will of the Father are your family - true companions.
